Recorded at Sounddesign Studio, Hagenberg, Austria, June 2008.

Bing Crosby has done one, so has Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole. In more recent times, James Taylor, Bette Midler and Sheryl Crow have done one too. The Beatles didn’t, nor did the Rolling Stones, but Twisted Sister did. Christmas albums, of course.

And it’s not just a phenomenon in popular culture. Jazz musicians have not been immune from spreading a little Yuletide joy – Oscar Peterson’s Oscar Peterson’s Christmas, Duke Pearson’s Merry Ole Soul, Jimmy Smith’s Christmas ’64 and Sonny Criss’ Sonny Crissmas. And in a list that would probably stretch from here to Lapland, more recently there has been Wynton Marsalis’ Crescent City Christmas, Diana Krall’s Christmas Songs and Al DiMeola’s Winter Nights.

Yet with all these albums you get the feeling that somewhere along the line, somebody has decided it has not been such a bad idea to cash-in on the festive season. But not so Paul Zauner, “It is easy to take commercial advantage of Christmas with album of Christmas themes,” he says. “But I did not want to express commercial ideas, just express our musical ideas – there’s some free improvisation in there which is certainly not useful for commercial purposes!”

Zauner uses the Christmas theme as an opportunity to make a genuine artistic statement, using Christmas related themes, yes, but in ways that make sense for a group of improvisers – his Christmas All Stars. In fact, he really didn’t want to make a Christmas album at all, but had to give in to demand from supporters of his now famous Christmas concerts series in his native Austria. “It all began near my home,” he says. “There is a castle there and they asked me to produce a series of concerts as the seasons change every three months.”

So while this CD may not be a commercial album, it is most definitely about that most special time of year – Christmas. The album takes its title from Robert Michael Weiss’ young grandson, who used to declare “Ho Ho Ho,” every time he saw an image or likeness of Father Christmas. It’s a good title, capturing the mood of happiness and pleasure of music making that is very evident throughout this album as well as providing the ideal accompaniment if you like to spice your Christmas spirit with a little jazz.
